Every year, I make brackets based on several of the popular and unpopular ratings systems out there. Usually they are split between two teams pretty evenly, but this year, SRS, SP, KenPom, 538, Sagarin, RPI, Massey, NET, and BPI all have Gonzaga as the number one team in the country. Normally, these are my highest scoring brackets, and I think they will still do well, but I am much more hesitant to trust them this year than in years past. I’ve never seen anything like what I’m seeing this year.
The other major thing that I’ve noticed:
Beyond the top line, most years these brackets are all chalk with a few upsets. Not this year. Almost every single one has a surprise Sweet Sixteen team that is a 6 or lower. Jeff Sagarin takes the prize for ballsiest take in thinking Colgate is an Elite Eight caliber team.
Based on all of this, I’m assuming that this year will be batshit insane and that you would be crazy to bet the house on Gonzaga. It feels too good to be true.
