Can someone explain split streaming to me like I’m 5?

I know there are so many posts about split streaming. But I don’t understand it. I can’t visualize how it would work. I’m super chatty in my CB room and have very specific ongoing conversations with my viewers. It’s obvious that I’m replying to them.
To split stream, do you have to be silent? How do you keep up with chats in each room? I keep wanting to try it but it baffles me.
