Housewarming party... Need suggestions

My husband and I just bought a new home. We opted not to have a reception when we got married, as my dad offered instead to pay the down payment on our home. Now he is suggesting that we have a house warming party, and said people would bring gifts. What is the Miss Manners thing to here? Can you have a registry for a housewarming? Certainly people will bring something... I'm totally lost on this
