Does the type of bike matter?

I have been recommended to take a trike but I really don't wanna take up that much space in my Van driving from Chicago to Burning man. Mainly because as a vanlife person I will be sleeping in my Van on the 3 day travel there. I have a pretty nice road bike. But it's for the road really thin tires for getting good milage in. Is theft something to worry about if I will be dancing like no one is watching? I'm thinking on buying a cheapy mountain bike from the 2nd hand store to take. Any input?
