Exercise and surgery

I recently had surgery and I havd been cleared to do light exercise at the gym.
Does exercise help or impede the healing process? The incision itself is not extremely large but its deep. I think blood flow benefits are to be had but I also dont want to burden my body with healing from the muscle damage.
