I’ve seen so many people criticise Gadd and how he dealt with the situation which I find extremely unfair. Gadd is a human being who has been through a lot and this was one of the realest, most sincere portrayals of trauma and the way in which it can diminish a person so much to the point they (subconsciously or consciously) get themselves into other abusive situations because they feel it’s what they deserve. I don’t know why people expect a person to just do ‘everything right’ and ‘normally’ after such a thing has happened to them. I truly admire Gadd for his honesty and his insight. It’s almost as if people expect him to suddenly be a perfect human? And only then will they truly consider him a victim? It’s a harmful and unrealistic standard. His ‘flaws’ were very natural and common trauma reactions of a vulnerable person. I find it so strange that someone has been so open and honest to the world and they’re met with ‘I didn’t like Gadd because he didn’t do enough / he put himself in the situation / he had too much self pity’ etc. I believe he also recognised his own flaws and i think the way he portrayed other characters (even ones that had hurt him) was incredibly mature and reflected a more nuanced reality.
Sorry I’m rambling lol. As a r*** survivor myself, I honestly felt relieved to see such an honest portrayal for once so was quite shocked to discover how many people dislike him.
Also, if I’ve missed something and he truly has done something wrong, please let me know - just basing this off what I have seen
because people suck
