Can the Atomos Master Caddy 4K be used as a general storage device?

Hooking them up via my dock to my MacBook keeps giving me an error message that says the disk cannot be read. The drives are currently empty and have never been used with a recorder or for anything else. All 3 that I ordered give me this error. Tried with a SATA to USB 3.0 cable, too; same error message.
Using M1 Pro Max with Ventura. Is there something I'm missing?
