Do you know where I can buy cheap wool?

Seen a wee crochet project I want to try out while I'm wallowing at home on maternity leave before the baby comes but shocked at the price of wool. I called my gran to raid her stash of ends of balls but she donated them all at the start of the year to be made into patches for charity blankets.
Anyone know where I can find it cheap? Had a gander around eBay but prefer to use local shops if I can.
