On the subject of stealth space travel
Post Body

A buddy and I are having a discussion, wherein he says that a good enough IR sensor makes stealth in space impossible.

I am of the opinion that if you were able to hollow out an asteroid, suspend a living space in the center of it, so there is an envelope of vacuum between the living chamber and the asteroids surface, it would be indistinguishable from another asteroid, at least as far as IR imaging is concerned.

Can anyone tell us which of us is correct, and if there are any other stumbling blocks to stealth in space?

What a champion

we're assuming whatever technology necessary to accomplish the goal, assuming it agrees with physics as we know it.

My asteroid example was to perform recon. You throw your rock past an enemy base and it's one of a hundred thousand passing by while you snap pictures or whatever else you need to do.
