I can't find anywhere that expressly answers this question, and when I google it, I keep getting information about unemployment while getting severance, which is not my question.
I was just laid off and given a couple of months of severance. I have wanted to try my hand at freelancing in my industry for awhile (I already know some successful freelancers who do exactly what I want to do), and it seems like the best way to do that would be to start freelancing while I'm getting the severance, and then if it's not working out, actively look for fulltime work.
If I start freelancing during the severance, can my company rescind the severance? Is that something that will be outlined in the paperwork I sign with them? Regardless of it is or not, I'd like to know what the actual law is, since I know sometimes companies put things in contracts that are against what is legal/not enforceable.
Thank you in advance for any advise or websites anybody knows of that answers this questions!
Yeah, I'm in a niche field, so I would carefully weigh the freelancing and if they'd find out or not thing before choosing to do anything.
I would say that there isn't much of a chance, depending on exactly what strata of my field I chose to freelance in. But it's definitely something I'm thinking about a lot.
There is no established law on it and it relies entirely on the terms of the agreement?

Got it, thank you so much. I will go over it with a fine toothed comb then.
