I'm sure I read somewhere (though I can't remember where now and it frustrates me), that although in movies we show greek hoplites crashing into each other toe to toe in a smashing of bronze and spears there are no records of this. Apparently we just don't know how they engaged the enemy. Whether it was a full on running collision or a stand off at spear length.
Is that actually true? Sadly my Greek only extends to "How beautiful is the piraeus" and "the ship is in...". Therefore my primary research has been extremely limited lol.
