Was their vehicle/transportation modification before the invention of internal combustion?

I mean, I assume that minor functional modifications were made, like adding a shelf to your wagon on the Oregon Trail and such but I mean, on like the scale that car and motorcycle modification is at today. Did cowboys shop for like really sick saddlebags and horseshoes? Were knights "pimping" their steeds? Really, I'm asking were things modified more for aesthetic, rather than functional use?
