Was the racial difference between Asians and Native Americans generally understood in the 19th c. United States?

Doing some historical reading, and I come across this:

"First, the court stated that the term "Indian" included the peoples of Asia.56 In support of this contention, the court pointed out that Columbus named the natives of America "Indians" in the belief that they were indeed Asian peoples.57 Since then, and until well into the nineteenth century, Native American and Asian people were regarded members of the same race.58"

Was this a general feeling at the time (the year of the case was 1854), or were these ideas rejected even in the 19th century?
