On the face of it, transporting criminals to Australia seems wildly impractical. In an era of high transport costs and long voyages, you opt to send criminals (who have often committed petty offenses) halfway around the world. I was also struck by the fact that the number of people who were transported to Australia was around 160,000 over 50 years, so only single digit thousands a year.

Was this method not wildly expensive compared to building more prisons in Britain or sending prisoners to less remote colonies?
