Is it garbage to pay for your monthly groceries with your reverse vending receipt?

Very common to see Germans (how you doing, foreign investor) with big trash bags full of cans, plastic and glass bottles, returning them weekly on the machines and getting a big fat check in return. Not sure how common it is in the US but you can certainly collect some extra and make some extra CAYSHHHHHHHHHH
