Got a new tank, curious as to how many fish I can get?

Hey all!

So my boyfriend and I got a new tank kit last night, and we're in the process of doing a fish-less cycle.

My question is, once the tank is cycled and ready to go, how many fish would we be able to get? We picked up a 37 gal tank that had a heater and a basic HOB filter. Boyfriend wants to get a Fluval 207 canister in a couple of weeks.

We are looking to get a couple blue/pink/red Glofish (6-12ish in total), about 6 starfire red tiger barbs, 2 plecos, maybe 4 dalmation mollies, and a group of mickey mouse platties. I'm guessing the actual numbers I wrote down, but the amount ended up being around 21-27 fish in total.

We read a couple of sites that say about 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, so I'm assuming that what we picked out is too much, but I wanted to ask to make sure.

Also, we'd only place the fish in batchs of 3 or 4, so we don't overload the system. I know dumping 27 fish in a tank at one time would be chaos.
