I've been wanting to see if I can prove to my Mom just how diverse anime can really be by finding something she genuinely enjoys. Most of her experience is secondhand exposure to things like Sailor Moon, Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon.
When she gets involved in a show or movie, she often feels there needs to be a character (or characters) she can connect to. She feels a lot of anime fails to connect in part because of flat visual expressions. Likewise she tends to need either an ongoing story point that's slowly being revealed and/or a character she can connect to and care about to stick with a series.
She says she likes action, mystery, and horror genres. She's also mentioned how with things even like the movie The Avengers she will at times have to intentionally allow herself to suspend her disbelief to enjoy them.
As an example, she loves the Dark Knight Batman movie: action, not too ridiculous with fantasy elements, and a central character (the Joker) with amazing, well... character.
She doesn't like reading subtitles, though if there's something too perfect that lacks a good English dub, I can try my hand at convincing here to go for it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
