Basically, an Anime/Manga that takes a backseat to trying to tell an ambitious story and instead focuses more on party interactions and the journey ahead. (Though having an ambitious story that is handled well is a plus.) Basically a modern version of The Slayers? (Heavy plus if it has a good dub like Slayers) I'm not a huge fan of SAO and the "Stuck in Another World" genre, it just feels too much like the MC is just another self-insert (Which if you like it, there's nothing wrong with you. I just don't like em myself because there's often a huge focus on the MC instead of the party as a whole)
