How to "tilt-to-wake"?

Hello! My watch had the always on display setting enabled that permitted me to check the time quickly, but it drained my battery really quickly, so I disabled it and instead enabled tilt-to-wake, which what I think it does is turning on my screen when I lift my wrist to check the time, but it doesn't seem to work, am I doing something wrong?
