First of all, I know for certain that I have PTSD from audibly witnessing the Virginia Tech Shooting... That being said...
Am I overreacting by seeing the carnage and knowing that there is more to come (they have been cut off from the media) after witnessing flash flooding first hand during Tropical Storm Fred in the same areas that have been affected through Helene?
My house was flooded way back when and I was put in temporary housing for over a month. I also witnessed first hand the devastation that it caused. I spoke to people that lost loved ones. I had trouble then. I'm kind of having troubles now even though I moved away and am not affected.
I don't really have any one to speak to about this and i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now and I think I might need some reassurance.
You're not overreacting; your feelings are totally valid. Having PTSD from witnessing something traumatic makes it understandable to feel overwhelmed by the floods, especially since you’ve experienced similar devastation before. It’s tough to deal with these emotions alone, so don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you need it. You’re allowed to feel what you’re feeling.
