The Byzantines were on the rise following the reign of Emperor Basil II who reconquered the Balkans all the way to the Danube River. But this resurgence was quickly cut short by the failure at Manzikert and the empire not only lost vast amounts of territory but also was thrust into political chaos. If the Byzantines had won the battle of Manzikert is it safe to say that their rise may have continued and that they would be able to defend, consolidate, and capitalize on their conquests and current position to that time?
