Just three weeks ago, my wife and I adopted a 5 year old retired female Mal who was used for breeding. She had 4 litters during that time but the last one seemed to really stress her out so the breeders decided it was time for her to live a house dogs life.
She is very well trained and sweet as can be. She has decided that the living room is where she is the most comfortable so that is where she spends a good majority of her time. She just started coming into the kitchen on her own about a week ago and now I've been trying to get her to come upstairs and downstairs as our next steps.
Even when we leave for work, she has run of the house and she just stays in the living room and chews her bone, plays with her toys, and sleeps. She also walks extraordinarily well on a leash. She is definitely skittish when it comes to new noises but I can understand that.
However, just this past week we've been running into a bit of an issue. She is fine all day when we are at work. I'll get home and take her out to the bathroom and I'll watch her pee. Sometimes she'll go a couple times on our walk.
In this past week though, when I bring her back in the house and I walk away from her, she pees in the living room. I was told that this was some sort of separation anxiety that she could be having with me. It's like it's ok for me to leave in my car but when I'm in the house, she wants me with her the entire time.
The problem is that she won't come with me to certain rooms of the house and she will wait for me to walk away before going to the bathroom so it's been next to impossible to catch her in the act.
I'm thinking once she becomes comfortable with the rest of the house and she can be with me on her own, that much of these potty issues will subside.
Has anyone else here experienced this with their Mals? If so, any tips to handle it?
