Discussion prompts:

  1. In this chapter, we finally see the relevance of all those cloister chapters, and why it’s important to read them, too! Once again, the book draws parallels, now in more depth, between the cloister and the galleys. What do you think of the comparisons and contrasts between the two?
  2. More parallels to things mentioned in the past: Valjean being an excellent tree-pruner, and now a gardener; Valjean being helped by a bishop, and now being helped by nuns. Hugo says a lot in this novel, but he sure does have a reason for it most of, if not all, the time.
  3. What are your thoughts on the development and growth of Valjean’s character so far at this point in the novel?
  4. This is such a positive closing to a book, with Valjean and Cosette both happy, and tomorrow, we start a new volume!
  5. Other points of discussion? Favorite lines?

Final line:

Many years passed in this manner; Cosette was growing up.
