Chapter 54 / LIV - “Rise and Fall” reading discussion
Post Body

  1. The title seems to refer most explicitly to the financial markets; what might it refer to more subtly?

  2. Has Albert’s fondness for his mother changed the count’s attitude toward him? Is his decision to exclude Albert from the dinner at Auteuil a means of protecting him?

  3. Is the count trying to freeze aspects of the house at Auteil (the garden, the red damask wall hanging) in time as a way to recapture the past? If so, is this desire born out out of the traumatic break from his own past?

Final sentence of chapter:

“Bertuccio bowed and went out.”
