Med brews how do they work scientifically?

Before I start I am so sorry if this annoys anyone but it’s annoying me being stuck in my head wondering. So when making medical brews does the berries and stuff change the chemical composition and effects of the narcotics or is it just magically not knocking you out. Since to me the thought of putting narcotics in with berries yes could heal you but in logical thinking if it doesn’t change the structure or composition it would most definitely put you in a healing hibernation of sorts.
