I just got a hold of my grandmothers 1998 4Runner SR5 this past week. She has maintained it well over the years but there are some things that I need to do in order to get it to where I want it to be.
It only has 130,000 original miles on it and she's owned it since new. All in all, it's a good shape and basically just needs an immediate brake job as it gets the known "shuttering and shimmy" problems associated with that specific brake system. Doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it's jarring to say the least. The brakes are easily over 8 years old.
However, one of the first things I'm doing is fluid swaps.
I checked the transmission fluid and it was nice and red but I would like to do a 2 quart drain and fill as I don't know when the last time it was done. She has a lot of the records but not everything.
Should I make sure to use Dexron III? I've read that Toyota has switched to Dexron VI but I've read that dumping synthetic into an older transmission is possibly asking for trouble. I'm assuming I should stick to Dexron III. Is that a correct assumption?
I'm also flushing the coolant as it currently has a yellow coolant from the last time she took it to a random shop for a timing belt and water pump replacement. I'm going to flush and get Toyota coolant back in there. Also, because I have no idea which coolant was used, I need to make sure I know whats in there so I don't end up mixing two different types if I have to refill or top off at any point.
